Rough-legs are rare but regular in TN, but I loved the opportunity to study the concentration of birds in Sax-Zim. There were at least 10 birds in the area, of various ages and plumages. This is of course a classic immature bird. Notice the pale eye.

I had hoped to photograph several of these birds, but in my experience they are wary even for hawks. This was by far the best photo op that I had, as this bird settled in briefly near where I was parked.
