Greater White-fronted Goose

Long Point Refuge, KY

These White-fronts, or Specklebellies to hunters, were photographed at Long Point NWR, just a couple of miles north of the TN/KY state line at Reelfoot. This is my one of my favorite places to study geese, with all 4 of our expected geese regular here. Flocks of well-over 1000 are seen here regularly. These birds are quite variable, especially as to the amount of black 'speckling' on the belly. These birds are easily picked up on from a distance, with the orange legs and feet really standing out. Also, on sleeping birds, the narrow white flank-line is a good mark.
