Yellow-crowned Night-Heron

Whites Lake Refuge, TN

Immature Night-Herons can be difficult to seperate. I cut the legs off on this shot, and they are a good feature to look at. On this bird, the very stout, and mostly dark bill is evident. Black-crowned has a fairly heavy bill, but it is sharply pointed and more extensively yellow in juvenile birds like this. The spots on the wing coverts are small, whereas on Black-crown they are larger and more obvious. It is subtle, but the thin edging of the coverts can also be seen. Black-crowned also has a shorter, thicker neck.
