This intimate portrait of a Wedge-tailed Shearwater was also taken at Kilauea Point NWR. This bird was sitting outside its nesting burrow under the thick vegetation, only a few feet from the walking path! Even in this proximity, it took a little looking to finally track this bird down to its location, the moaning calls of the birds helped as well. I had great looks at Wedge-tail from several of the Points on the island, and especially from a late afternoon cruise along the Napali coast, which also produced my lifer Black Noddy.
