Sandhill Crane is known to feed either by gleaning food items from the surface or probing the subsurface and extracting the food from there. I want to share a few frames of the Sandhills probing and extracting the white grubs from the ground. Some exotics cuisines around the world are known to include insects in their menu. I was offered fried locusts in Asia but decided to pass on that "delicacy". Here, on some photos it looks like cranes are enjoying the taste of the grubs. Bone appetite.
In this folder one also will find many photos of Sandhills searching, probing, extracting and swallowing white grubs. They worked very efficiently, usually taking a couple of minutes to find and eat one. Also some close-up portraits photos and close-ups of the nictitating membrane are included.
So, if you are interested in ridding the ground of white grubs, hire or make friends with the Sandhill Crane. One limitation – it will only eat large ones.
