Nestling - Covered in gray down.
Immature (First Winter) - All brown body, extensive white mottling on underside of wing. Tail brown with a white base.
White-Belly I (Second Winter) - Stomach white with dark streaking; dark hoodlike head and chest. Light triangle on the back. More white mottling on tail.
White-Belly II (Third Winter) - Even more extensive areas of white mottling on undersides.
***Transitional - Blend of immature and adult plumage;white head often speckled with dark feathers.
Adult (By Fifth Winter) - Trademark white head and tail; dark brown body.
