Walt Whitman Heritage Corridor

A gallery about the area in and around Huntington, Long Island, NY.
Walt Whitman, American poet, essayist, journalist and humanist was born here.
This gallery contains photos taken of the house where Whitman was born, as well as several
other houses that belonged to members of the extended Whitman family.
A five-square-mile area near his original home is called the Whitman Heritage Corridor, where privately owned historic homes, dating back 100 or even 200 years, are interspersed with more recent sprawling ranches and stucco colonials.

Walter Whitman was born May 31, 1819 in West Hills, Town of Huntington, Long Island, to parents of Quaker background, Walter and Louisa Van Velsor Whitman. He was the second of nine children and immediately nicknamed "Walt" to distinguish him from his father. After Walt, Whitman Sr. named three of his seven sons after American leaders: Andrew Jackson, George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson; the oldest was named Jesse, another boy died unnamed after six months and the sixth son, the youngest, was simply named Edward.
