Peace and Plenty Inn

Long Island, NY

IN this hilly area of Huntington, narrow roads twist past dense woodland and rich green fields of grass where horses bend their long necks down to graze.

Among the historic homes, the house at 107 Chichester Road, known as the Peace and Plenty Inn, may be the oldest. Built in 1680, the long red shingle house, covering about 3,500 square feet on 2.3 acres, once served as a town meeting hall, a tavern and rest stop for travelers on horseback.

Hi Lovely pictures. Any pictures of the barn or carriage house?

I spent tons of time here with my best friend, Lavinia, just rambling all over those wonderful hills, in the playhouse, in a secret garden, in the taproom (regarding the occasional chunk of grass or weeds poking up through the floorboards), pestering her Mom as she cooked in that enormous kitchen, feeding the cats and St. Bernard, eating in the huge dining room with the walk-in fireplace (there was also one in the family room, where we danced like little maniacs to Night on Bald Mountain and The Kingston Trio) - the Halloween party in our terms when the man of the house dressed up in a glowing skeleton costume and chased is through every book and cranny...many of us ended up in a bathroom upstairs, in pitch blackness, trying not to make a sound to reveal our location...what a magical place that was to inhabit!

I have done my family genealogy and Chichester is in my family. Yje link is throught Mary Nostrand married to Eliphalet Chichester. The house is now for sale for $999,000.00. Hmmmmmmmmmm I wonder if I could get a family discount to buy this historical place?

My wife's maiden name is Chichester. We understand that one of her ancestors, Asia owned the house.

40 years ago, 8/28/71, I was married at Peace and Plenty, the home of our dear friends. I have photos of us on the hall stairs, in the gardens, and in the dining room, celebrating that special day. My father painted a portrait of the barn (before it fell down) and my sister sketched the house (I see the wisteria no longer eats the front porch). Strange to see it empty and for sale, where it once brimmed with family, friends, good food and conversation. I hope it continues to be preserved and loved.
thank you for bringing back good memories - Barbara M.

Being of direct relation to the orginial builder and owner James Chichester - 1662 hopefully it remains intact.

I drove by the Inn yesterday and saw a real estate sign on the property. Any comments?
