Drawing by Captain Charles Allgower of the Conferate fleet in Pensacola harbor, located at the Warrington Naval Yard, of which Fort Barrancas was a part. Charles Frederick Allgower was born on January 7, 1837 in Bavaria (Bayern), Germany. He had been a soldier in Germany, and at the age of 17 emigrated to New York where he worked as an engineer. He was listed as a civil & mechanical engineer in the 1859, 1860, & 1861 city directories for Boston. On June 12, 1861, following the outbreak of the Civil War, Charles enlisted at New York City and mustered in as a Private in Company C, 6th NY Infantry “Billy Wilson’s Zouaves“ to serve two years. He submitted sketches of his military life to Harper’s Weekly Illustrated while in service with the 6th New York Infantry in Florida and Louisiana. Charles lost an eye during the Battle of Santa Rosa Island, Florida when the Confederates staged a sneak attack from Pensacola on the Camp of Wilson’s Zouaves and the 1st US Artillery at Fort Pickens on October 9, 1861. He fought in the battles of Pensacola, Fort Barrancas, Milton, Florida, and operations at Port Hudson, and the Battle of Irish Bend.
