Fort Pulaski, 24-Pounder Flank Howitzer In Demibastion

Savannah, Georgia

Though rated a 24-pounder, these cannon were not used for solid shot or shell, but for canister rounds to be used against infantry formations. A canister consisted of a thin metal casing, similar to a coffee can, that contained 48 iron balls 1 and 1/3 inches in diameter. On firing, the casing would disintegrate spraying the balls in a pattern similar to a shotgun, with devastating results.
