Fort Pickens, Rodman 15-Inch Smoothbore Seacoast Gun, Pattern 1861

Fort Pickens, Florida

The most impressive weapon used in System Three forts was the 15-inch Rodman smoothbore cannon, such as this excellent example at Fort Pickens. Weighing 50,000 lbs. (not including the massive iron carriage), these massive guns were generally mounted on centre-pintle carriages. This provided maximum flexibility in the use of the weapon by allowing a full 360-degree traverse.
