I met this gentleman at the food stand that is patronized by many of the Carnies. The food stand becomes a social gathering place for the fair workers, because it is open the week before the fair opens, and for me it was a natural place to chat with Carnies, and learn about the “Carnie Life”. I was surprised to learn that this particular Carnie was the guy who dressed up as a clown seated in a dunk tank. His job is to insult and heckle passerby’s and goad them into trying to hit a target with baseball, which will then dunk him in a tank of cold water. When in costume he is unbelievably obnoxious. Out of costume he is a pleasant, intelligent and totally charming man. “Hey your mother must have been really ugly, na na na!”
