On August 23, 2011, the National Cathedral sustained significant damage as a result of the 5.8 magnitude East Coast earthquake. Three of the four spires in the central tower were toppled and many of the flying buttresses on the east end were cracked. In addition, several ornate gargoyles and carvings were toppled.
On September 7th, a crane working on the south side of the Cathedral to stabilize debris on the central tower fell over. The Herb Cottage building next to the parking lot was damaged as well as several cars.
It is estimated that total repairs will take years and is estimated to cost 25 million dollars.
The Cathedral re-opened to the public on November 12, 2011.
