| Stempel
/ Gradierung: Der Stempel besteht aus einem vorangestellten, übergroßen "F", zwischen dessen Querstrichen die Anfangsbuchstaben des Nachnamens "AX" angeordnet sind. Unter dem zweiten Querstrich ist rechts Platz für 4 Einzeltypen. Die beiden hinteren bilden das Kürzel für die Jahreszahl. Davor stehen 2 Buchstaben, aufsteigend von F bis A. Der erste steht für die objektive Bewertung: Maserung, Spots, also allgemein den Gesamteindruck der Holzqualität. Der zweite Buchstabe steht für Franks subjektive Einschätzung der Gesamtausführung, also eine Art persönliche Bewertung von Form, Proportionen und Gesamtwirkung. Auf den kürzesten Nenner gebracht: wie sie ihm persönlich gefällt. Mehr ist im Moment zur Gradierung nicht zu sagen. Es kann durchaus sein, daß sich da im Laufe der Zeit etwas änden wird. Vielleicht sind auch mit 6 Buchstaben die Grenzen zu eng gesteckt. In Verbindung mit der Jahreszahl wird jedoch jederzeit nachvollziehbar sein, wie weit die Entstehung einer Pfeife zurückliegt. Dass ein persönliches B oder C in 5 Jahren anders zu werten sein wird als eins von heute, liegt auf der Hand. Deshalb wird es für den Moment bei diesem System bleiben. |
Stamping
/ grading: The stamp consists of a supersized "F" and the first two letters of Frank's surname "AX", which reside between the upper and lower branch of the "F". Below the lower branch of the "F", there's room for 4 letters. The last two encode the year the pipe was made (like "05" for 2005). The first two show the grading, in letters ascending from F to A. The first letter contains the assessment of the overall quality of the briar: graining and sandpits (if any). The second letter reflects Frank's personal opinion of the pipe's qualities. It shows his feeling about shape, proportions and overall expression. In short: how much he likes this pipe. For the time being that's all to be said about his grading. It's well possible that it will be subject to change. Perhaps the boundaries were set too narrow with a range of only 6 letters. But relying on the year code it will always be possible to see when this special pipe was made. It is pretty obvious that a "personal" B or C will mean something different 5 years from now than today. So for the time being this system will be left like it is now. |
