The Maison Carrée is the only completely preserved Roman temple in the world.
I was a bit disappointed in my hope to take decent pictures
of this amazing monument because it was partially surrounded by scaffoldings.
So I took this photo just as memory.
“Maison Carrée” means literally “ Square House”,
it was built at the end of the first century b.c.
Maybe American visitors would be interested in knowing
that the Maison Carrée had been chosen
as model to inspire the State Capitol of Richmond ( Virginia),
since Thomas Jefferson had admired it enormously when he visited Nîmes in 1787.
This photo is part of my visual diary about my trip to Nîmes.
