now the administrative base for the Edinburgh International Festival
and has been renamed as "The Hub".
The church dates from 1844 when it served as both a parish church
and the annual meeting place for the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.
It was designed in the English Gothic style by James Gillespie Graham and
Augustus Welby Pugin, who was responsible for the huge 240-foot spire which
provides the highest point in the city centre.
