ITIS and USDA lists two varieties of which only subsp. angustifolium is found in WA.
subsp. angustifolium: northern NA and Rocky Mtn. Peduncles glabrous or scabrous on angles; culms 20–100 cm.
subsp. triste: polar NA. Peduncles usually scabrous all around; culms not more than 30 cm.
Note straight, strong stem from which white, cottonish inflorescence on flexible stems (peduncles), generally pointing down. Found generally in large groups in wet soils, near montane pond/lake.
