Ireland is a predominantly Catholic country although many people have had their faith shaken by the abuse scandals which rocked the Church in recent years. There has been a steep decline in the numbers going for ordination and attendances at mass have dropped. Old ways are giving way to new and this week the church authorities announced that they are to relinquish control of primary schools in several areas around the country.

Beautiful image and difficult topic... we have chosen Catholic education for our daughter. It is still a choice here although there is talk of consolidation of parishes amongst some of the smaller towns near us.

I love how you've captured the light here.

A scene that brings many of us back to the older churches scattered around the country.

Similar happening around here: catholic schools are consolidating and/or parishes are closing because of costs. Not enough priests and nuns to staff them among other things.

Such a shame a few have ruined things for the many
Janice Dunn20-Nov-2011 09:37
In NZ there are not enough priests - and there are hardly any nuns now too.
Beautiful lamp here.

Great image to illustrate the subject

Beautiful rich light and tones. It is humans who give the church a bad name. V

I have a deeply personal grudge against the Catholic church, so good riddance I say. This is a very beautiful photograph though. V

An excellent photo. V I think the decline will continue until the Roman Catholic Church fully reforms and cleans out all who fostered or allowed the abuse and becomes more democratic and humble.

Taking God out of our lives....what the world would like to do. Love the image. I'll pray for all of us.

I bet they don't relinquish any of their money mind! Its always worried me that there is too much religion and no enough Christianity. An interesting thought provoking words and image.

Beautifully layered picture. Ornate! It is sad, terribly sad about the behaviors of some men in the priesthood; heaven weeps, I feel sure.

A beautiful image of the lamp. At last its light is reaching corners that have been dark for too long.
globalgadabout19-Nov-2011 23:18
superb photo of this intricate ornament and surrounds...all reeking of the wealth of the old church...it seems there was always a lot happening in the shadows though, to the great shame of the hierarchy..the central message of humility and compassion has been seriously undermined by the sordid exploitation of the vulnerable..

A beautiful image of this gold lamp against the stained glass window. It really captures what I think of when I picture a Catholic church. V.

Many of the parochial schools have also shut down in Philly due to declining enrollment. It's very sad to see people getting away from the church....

Nice image of the old lamp. Interesting to hear of the developments regarding the schools.
