The Green Church

This is my favourite building in Dundalk. St Nicholas Church, popularly known as The Green Church because of its copper spire, is the oldest building still in use. It dates back to the 13th century although it was extensively rebuilt and extended since then. It is still used as a place of worship by the local Church of Ireland congregation and is also used as a venue for concerts.

Dundalk must have been affluent by the 13th century to afford such a sturdy and resilient temple of worship...that continuity preserves a sense of roots though...wonderful shot of this historic building and site...V

An interesting paradox -- the grave markers in the foreground speak of death, but the church behind them claims a belief in eternal life. An inspiring photograph.

Very pretty. They don't build them like this anymore!

Such a pretty scene that you've captured Mairead! The copper spire just doesn't seem to fit with the style of the church; was it added long after the church was built?

I think I know why it gets it's name :0) Lovely sunny Autumn day!
