A Matter of Life and Death

When photography is a hobby it is easy to forget that for some it can be a matter of
life and death. A grim reminder of how dangerous a livelihood it is for those who
ply their trade in war zones came when I went for a cup of coffee in the Flower Market
this afternoon. Picking up the glossy supplements from the Sunday Times, I was
faced with a feature on Tim Hetherington and Chris Hondros, the two photographers
killed in Libya last month.
While people like Robert Fisk, John Pilger and Don McCullin were among my
heros when I was studying journalism at college, I knew that I would never be
brave enough to want to go to conflict zones. It's the rare few who risk their
lives to tell the world what is happening in places like Afganistan, Libya, Israel,
or wherever the conflict erupts.

I honor the reporters and photographersas well as health care workers who put their lives on the line everyday in areas of conflict. It is these people who bring us the horrors of war and risk their lives to do so.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if everyone in this world could get along and put them out of business... but the pain and carnage of war continues and there are brave souls who risk it all to bring it to us in pixels and words.

So true, so well said! I admire your way of reminding us and the words you find to explain.
Great work, Mairead!

Great tribute Mairead in your words, the world needs these brave people to get the truth from such places, such a horrible thing to happen to these heroes. v

Brining the news to our eyes has been the ultimate sacrifice.

Very powerful and humbling image for those of us who use our cameras as toys.

Very true, we often take photos and film reporting in the news for granting not thinking about the dangers that reporters and photographers face. A very well composed image.

This wonderfully designed image communicates its message as well as any from anywhere. Fortunately, you can be effective even if you don't risk death.

Indeed camera is a tool which can be and must be used to show the truth! My compliments! ~V

Wonderful photo that suits your narrative. The b&w and simple almost stark table setting adds quite an atmosphere. Reality bites. V

here at home we live a safe, rarefied existence compared to those brave souls who face the dangers of this tumultuous and violent world, and provide the media and the world with images..their work is admirable and their passing deeply sorrowful....respect for life is still a chimera, as reflected in the death toll of the dedicated witnesses who walk into the eye of the storm of human emotiions to show us all what's really going on...bravo Mairead for your salute and solidarity..

We take for granted the pictures of war we see in our newspapers. Thanks for reminding us of the brave men and women who bring those pictures to us. V

The image is an interesting contrast; a story of great danger in a place of great safety (in asmuch as anywhere is). Mono seems to emphasise the gravity of it.

Yes, you're right - sometimes we need to be reminded of the sacrifices others make...a sobering image Mairead, but none the less powerful for that....
