On today's shopping list.....

My sniffles have developed into a fully blown head cold so
I had to add tissues and some medication to my shopping
list today. Also picked up a book as I intend heading to
bed early.
I have mixed feelings about supermarkets selling books
at discounted prices. On one hand, I welcome a bargain,
but I also recognise that it undermines the trade of
regular booksellers. This week Waterstones announced that
it intends closing its wonderful Dawson's Street shop in Dublin,
although I suspect that buying from online sites such as
Amazon and the advent of the Kindle, iPad etc will probably
do more damage than supermarkets which stock mostly
trashy best sellers along with the odd bit of literary fiction.

I agree! I feel the same about WH Smith's - I can't believe it's the biggest bookseller in the UK, all the stores have the same titles and they're all the Top 40 best sellers...I was completely stumped the other week at Heathrow T5 when I wanted to get a couple of books for the flight - all I could find were WH Smiths all of whom had the same stock - all chick lit, bodice rippers and lust in the dust, couldn't find a decent book for love nor money... :o((

Hope you are feeling better by now!
The book stores here in the U.S. are having major problems. I so much enjoy browsing in a bookstore but I must admit, it is real easy to order from Amazon. As a matter of fact, I should have several books delivered to my door soon and they cost less than through a traditional store.

You're bound to catch a cold if you keep drinking from damp glasses! ;-)

Hope you are on the mend soon. I agree it would be a real shame to see the small book stores all closing. There js nothing better than browsing through one of them. Super composition! ~V~

Nicely composed image. I get a head cold about once every 3 or 4 years and I'm very glad it's only that often because they make you feel so miserable. Get well soon.

Lovely colourful composition. Interesting thoughts on the publishing industry. They keep telling me that warm brandy is good for colds .... oh hell, it's good anyway. V

Hope you feel better soon, i am not getting into the supermarket debate for obvious reasons, a kindle does look like a good option though.

This is a super still life. It beautifully tells a your 'sad' story. Hope you get over your cold soon.

Sorry to hear that you're down with the bug. But if you can take some time off it'll at least provide a bit of de-stressing reading time. And capturing images like this which have extraordinary vibrancy in the colours; well lit, avoiding any real blow-outrs in the packaging.
Unfortunately the best sellers (at least on new releases) are where a lot of the major book sellers (used to) make high margins, though even there chain variety stores have been undercutting them for years. The ones who will survive are those who go on line as soon as possible, do it really well, and use their bricks and mortar flagship stores as more of a marketing device than the main revenue generators.

Oh dear... colds are horrible. Kindle... still pondering one of those, real paper for the moment, but not with the groceries :o)
