The University was built at the height of the famine as part of a relief scheme to provide work and was opened as Queen's College Galway on 30th October 1849. National University of Ireland, Galway was one of the three Queen's Colleges founded under the Queen's Colleges (Ireland) Act 1845, the others being located in Belfast and Dublin. The Quadrangle Building is a replica of Christ Church at the University of Oxford in a 'Tudor Gothic' architectural style and is built from limestone. The Quadrangle is used primarily for administrative purposes now and houses the offices of the President and Vice-Presidents. Up to the closing quarter of the 20th century the President of the University and his family resided in the Quadrangle
