A photographer with his camera (Sharif El-Hamalawi)

Author Comment:

I selected this one because it shows the typical way of Cubans to
overcome the shortcomings of daily life. This man earns his living by
phogographing tourists in front of the Capitolio in La Habana with his
quite antique camera. He is proud of what he does. Somehow I found the
reversion of roles curious. I took this picture with my several
thousand dollar camera just for fun. He earns his living by using a
tool that we would put into a museum. Neverhteless he was not unhappy
and proud. He wasn't ashamed either. He even posed for me and whe had
a friendly chat. The picture expresses this mixture of pride and
poverty.
