I used 3/4" plywood to make the arches for the hold-down brackets, but you could use solid wood as well. Make the hole about 1/8" - 3/16" larger than the pipe that you will be using for the boom, to make insertion easier and to allow some play for ease in arranging the boom pipes for storage (details later).
I happened to have some wing bolts on hand so I used them, but you could use fancier knobs and bolts if you wish, such as 1.5" rose knobs from leevalley.com, or wing and bar knobs from the same source.
I simply drilled and tapped the hold-down bracket for the 1/4" NC thread of the bolts, since I don't anticipate tightening and loosening those bolts several times a day for 250 days a year. If you find that the wooden threads begin to deteriorate, you can just drill a larger hole and install a threaded insert nut.
