Along the Rio Grande and the Texas - Mexican border, lies Big Bend. It is named for the vast curve of the Rio Grande in this part of remote southwest Texas.
It is a wildly beautiful natural region, with a complex and fascinating history. Over one million acres of public land including Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park.
For photos of the beautiful and interesting scenery of the two parks, please see my creating my Enjoying Isolation Gallery.
Big Bend is home to a few remarkable communities: Marathon, Study Butte, Terlingua Ghost Town, and Lajitas.
Desert environments have inspired great philosophers, poets, artists and dreamers of every description. The Chihuahuan Desert,
that the Big Bend region is a part of, is no exception. Once described as a dusty bohemia, the greater Terlingua area is home to musicians, painters,
sculptors, photographers, lapidarists, ceramicists, talented actors, river guides, retirees, lost souls, hermits, prickly introverts, park rangers, and die-hard desert fanatics.
