868. Big

7 January 2007

Trudge, trudge, trudge. On and on he walked, wondering the whole time whether this path did have an end. As he soldiered on, he started thinking about the vastness of space. About how unimaginable it was. It made his head spin to think about it; yet think about it he did. If everything started with the 'Big Bang', he wondered, then what was there before the explosion, and where did all the 'stuff' come from that makes up those trees and everything else? How could there have been nothing there to start with: not even time? How is that possible? If the universe is expanding, then what lies beyond it? At this point he began to feel quite anxious. He was caught in a paradigm: he wondered how something could go on forever, and he also wondered how the universe could have an end! He also thought about the physicists and astronomers who look at all the galaxies in the middle of the universe who say they are looking back in time to the beginnings of everything. He didn't even pretend to understand how it worked. He looked ahead for a sign that the path was coming to an end. It wasn't yet. He looked down at the ground and muttered in time with his footsteps: trudge, trudge, trudge.

At first sight I thought I'd say something from "Gone With the Wind" like "I'll never be hungry again." Then after reading your comments, I got the super queasy feeling I always get when I think about the universe and death and GWTW was the farthest thing from my head.

A very beautiful photo, Stu.
