feature of PS CS2 sure can bring out the "unwanted" features of a portrait.

Sometimes learning how to do things right can be more about how not to do them wrong.

It does make things appear that you never knew where there. Im guessing the B&W was due to shadow and highlights messing up the color. I will always use curves to do the same thing without messing up the color as bad.
