Some of the Kayakers told me the best think about running "The Sinks", on the Little River in the Great Smoky Mountains NP, is that you are cleaner after the Sinks then when you started. Cause you get scrubbed!
The Sinks is a fifteen foot drop and when I took this image Sunday it was running at 2100 cubic feet per second. The next two miles are class III and Class IV.
The Sinks were created at the turn of the century before it was a National Park. The area was rich with loging timber. The Little River was used to float logs down the mountain but this area the logs would get bunched up so they used dynamite to blast the rocks away and free up the congestion.
This blasting is what makes it safe to jump off the rocks today at the bottom of the sinks where it is a huge sink hole that is popular with kayakers and rock jumpers alike.
Yes I know I used this image the other day as an alternative but I just love the facial expresion so much I had to put back into my main PAD gallery. I did do more post work on it today so that counts towards my rules for this year.
The rest of this River Kayak gallery can be found here. http://www.pbase.com/lundy/river_kayak_gsm_january_22_2006
Please let me know before you use my images so we wont have to get the lawyers involved! :)
