My bread knife, in macro mode on a 50 cent piece of scrapbook paper. If you like to do macro shots and are bored with either a white or black surface to shoot on, you should check out a scrapbook or crafts store they have hundreds of these 8x10 pieces of paper to choose from. They are less than a buck and can cheaply add color or texture to your shots.
This shot was taken with the light bounced (not thru) a umbrella. Click over here to see how much the shot changes when shot with direct flash, with the flash from the exact same position. http://www.pbase.com/image/41171252
Pay close attention to the knife's shadow and the difference in the light's exposure gradient on the surface of the scrapbook paper.
Here is the same shot with a different piece of scrapbook paper, where nothing else was changed but the papers. http://www.pbase.com/lundy/image/41171299
