Thanks to Paul Dummott for the info:
FKO 230 is a Leyland H(eavy motor car), first registered to Maidstone & District Motor Services, Knightrider Street, Maidstone, 26 May 1939 (M&D were their own agents).
As a student, I had a summer holday job as a conductor with M & D. The open top with its gale was a trial for conductors on the rare occasion that your ticket machine failed and you had to issue loose paper 'emergency'tickets. Lose just one and your pay was docked accordingly!

M&D bus FKO230, with chassis manufactured by Leyland Ltd. One of a batch of six built in 1939. These were the last open top double deck vehicles built as such in the country. In post war days It worked in the Hastings, Sussex area (with the other five) until being transferred to Sheerness for the summer of 1959 to join HKL863 (see notes under that photograph). It worked in the area until the end of the 1964 summer season.
