Funnily enough, the one thing I remember about the station concourse was the machine that would stamp your name onto a metal tag. It used to have a big arrow on the front that pointed to all the different letters and numbers.

It was a lovely old station, complete with a nice warm waiting room and W H Smith book stall. It was all built of wood and destroyed in the 1970's by a train which came through the buffers. I saw the aftermath, the train came right through and stopped just touch a taxi in the rank. It carried the safe from the ticket office in front of it. Sad to say, a lady buying a ticket was killed. Memories. We used to spend every Christmas with our relatives in Walthamstow. I loved it so much, I dreaded coming back! We usually travelled by bus, but the choice was always to stagger all the way back to Jefferson Road with all our luggage, or to get a taxi. Only one time can I remember my parents relenting and getting a taxi. It always seemed ten degrees colder in Sheerness than Walthamstow!

Note the two old Rolls-Royce taxis parked at the front. You don't often find 'Rollers' acting as taxis these days! Maurice Majurey.
