With wife and two youngsters (8 and 10) hiked Elk Creek and (I think) Bear Lake trails out of Happy Camp summer 1981. I have a bunch of great pictures which, unhappily, I never tagged. Have searched the internet for clues and came across your fine photographs, which were fine to view even though they were of no help in my search. If anyone know of good sources regarding those trails, I would be much obliged

Thank you for posting these beautiful photos of the Marble Mountains. I worked as a cook for one of the crews who were contracted to do a section of that famous mountain trail. Our journey would begin in Yreka. We would hike 3 miles to the job site. Our tents were alongside a meadow while the campsite was in a wooded area. My memories of this experience are wonderful. We experienced a stampede one evening. I think it was a wild predator, not sure what it was that alarmed a herd of deer. I thought our tents would be trampled, and all of us included. We also had a bear come into our camp during the daytime while the crew was at least a mile or so away from camp bombing out the side of a mountain. This was my chance to become a Calamity Jane. I fired a 45 into the air, and the bear decided he should leave. I was a brave little woman, and I did not realize the trouble I could have been in until years later when I educated myself about wild bears. But I give myself credit for firing in the air, and NOT at the bear.

Dude (Chris Parker), all the fish in the high alpine lakes are planted. No natives. Even if they were dropped by a bird, still not native. What did they swim up from the Scott River or what? JK But yeah that just sounded funny. Sorry if I offended you but that was just a retarded post.

Campbell and Cliff lakes are some of the most used lakes in the Marbles. You get there from Shackleford Trail head. If you are going to go to Cliff you might as well bush wack up the ridge to the PCT and go to ManEaten Lake, way better than Cliff lake. If you really want some solitude go Check out Milney and Wooly lakes. Hard as hell to get to but you wont find anybody there. Nice pics man. You sure do like Campbell and Cliff alot. I have always passed them up to get to Maneaten, always way to many folks at those ones. But really, nice pics.

Cliff Lake must be the place to go. No pictures of Sky High Lake with the cliffs on the south end. That's just as well. Maybe no one will go there. I'm going to look for Cliff Lake to find it's location and entry point. How far of a hike is it to get to Cliff Lake. I'll check my topo's. Beautiful pictures. I'm glad to have found this website.

I saw the bear. It's den is just up from little Sky High Lake. This was in 1974. Love the three walled cabin that has a perfect view of the Marble Mountains. This little cabin has been there for a long time. There are initials of folks that date back to, if I'm remembering correctly, 1920. My favorite place to go backpacking. The upper little lake always has good fishing. They are planters, not native. Fun anyway. Eastern Brook Trout. The big Sky High Lake is glorious. I'm currently recovering from a neurological condition, though with treatment I am going to make it up to the Marbles by the end of summer. Can't wait. Honeymooners Camp is the trailhead. Getting up to tree line and walking through the skunk cabbage is a thrill. Magnificent views.

I have a question about "The Cedars". I have been going through idlewild trailhead up to Upper Abbott's Cabin Site/Meadow since 1996, sometimes 2-3 times a year and I have never seen this spot! Where in relation to Abbott's Lower Cabin (that you show in the photos) is "The Cedars" as photographed by you? We know the cedars as a small grouping of cedar trees about 1 hour from the idlewild trailhead. Please email me with any info.........I am leaving on 7/26/10 to go for a 6 day trip with friends and my son and would like to see this spot. I worked packing salt to cattle in the Marbles in the '60s. I'm going to have my ashes scattered over Hank Wright meadow, one of the prettiest places on earth.

when i lived in humboldt in the early seventies , this was my BACKYARD !!! i dont think i ever seen more bear scat than ---> IN THE MARBLES !!! but i never saw the bear ?

We packed into Campbell every year from about '63 to '75 for two week treks. They used to run range cattle in there during the summer but we saw very few people. What is it like today??

Hi there -- I'm planning a trip into the AMrbles with my family for the 1st time. I happened to pick just this trip (Campbell/Cliff lakes). Somone todl me that this trip is very dry with many horse packers, but the pictures and trail descriptions don't look that way. Can you offer any insight re these comments? Thanks, Al

Great pictures. I hiked the CA PCT in 03, and this is a great reminder of how beautiful this area is. Definitely one of my favorite areas of the PCT.
