Incredible Bidwell Ranch right against Hat Creek Rim

This ranch is at the base of the huge canyon holding Lost Creek, just south of the lookout. It takes the creek and pipes it into a powerhouse to make hydroelectric power for the ranch, and then pipes the outflow water back into the creek which then flows into their own fish hatchery. This is a very luxurious and rare piece of property laid against the Hat Creek Rim.

This is the Bidwell Ranch, still held by decendants of the early wagon train leader and pioneer of the Bidwell Trail fame. The water that feeds the hydroelectric plant is the water you can see and hear, but can't get to as you walk the Rim trail. It flows out of the canyon wall that you walk east and then west around as you do the Rim. Called Lost Creek, it's a teaser, but really....you can't get there, don't try. The creek goes on to feed a privately owned fish hatchery on land leased from Floyd Bidwell. Also on Bidwell land or land that once belonged to the family is a SETI listening post...recognizable by all the radio telescopes. Floyd calls himself a dumb ol' cowboy, but he doesn't miss much. Sharp old guy when it comes to makin' a buck. Very cool friend of ours. Part of our tree house was donated by him.
