This view is from the deck of the Caravelle Hotel and looked at the elevator shaft where the last helicopter left Saigon. The elevator shaft is just to the right of the center of the bright orange light.
I knew this was from the top of the Caravelle even before I read your description. During the war on top of the Caravelle was an expensive French restaurant with an outside dance floor. You could dance, dine, drink and all the while watch the helicopter gunships circle the city, hear the 'crump' of artillery and often see tracers in the distance. Exotic, romantic and surreal ... all at the same time. Thanks for the memories ... voted
