Hamburg was a town of black freemen after the civil war. On July 4, 1879, the entire Hamburg Company of the South Carolina National Guard was hunted and then executed by white people from neighboring communities. The incident marked the beginning of century of 'Jim Crow Laws' in South Carolina.
