World of Speed: Approach to Pits

Photos cover the driving approach to the site of the World of Speed event, starting at
the end of the asphalt access road. They follow the driving route on the salt flats to the
main racing pits about 3 miles (4.5km) away. The driving route ran parallel to a dike
for most of the way; the dike appears as a low, dark hill to the right in several shots.

The first two rows of shots were taken in late afternoon of the first
day I was in Wendover. That day I merely walked on the salt. The
remaining photos were taken the next day, when I drove on the salt.

This Wikimapia aerial view shows the area in which the event took place:

The salt flats access road is the "tipped-on-its-side L" at left, ending abruptly in the
expanse of salt. The dike appearing in photos is the rounder-corner triangle at lower
center. The racing pits were located just east of the dike. Spectators and participants
had to drive from the end of the access road to the pit area east of the dike.
