I met these friendly people from Florida while they were taking a break from riding all-terrain
vehicles at Monitor Butte. This spot seems out in the middle of nowhere for someone who has
ridden six miles (9.6km) over rough dirt roads, so they were rather surprised to see me
approach on foot. I told them that I had traveled only 1.5 miles (2.5km) to reach this place.
The man told me of an adventure in the Everglades that involved fishing on the bank of a river
while an alligator nosed around on the opposite bank---spooky.
