Salt mess and Floating Island

Bonneville Speedway (Wendover, Utah)

When nature adds water to the salt flats and thrill-seeking motorists drive onto the wet surface, the
result is a gooey mess. This is not the best condition under which to attempt to set a new world land
speed record. Even with the best tires available ( http://www.pbase.com/listorama/image/70121552 )
the effort to cruise through this gunk is demoralizing. The rooster tail can be as high as 200 feet,
creating an aerodynamic drag that works against forward velocity. What I had hoped to see from this
spot was an unending field of brilliant white salt stretching to Floating Island in the distance
(just left of center of the horizon). Even the best-planned efforts are no match for Mother Nature.
Driving 800 miles per hour in my station wagon will have to wait until next year.

Lee, your generosity brings high-speed tears to my eyes. I'll have my people get with your people to arrange an initial get-together. What do they think about our team uniform?

Dave, not trying to be a LeeComeLate to the party, but I would like to offer you the use of my favorite high speed record attempt pit crew. They have a couple tools that might fit something on a Subaru.

I do not have a camera that can handle the speeds your Blue Wagon will reach, but I do have a very nice little pocket calender that should cover it.

Gary, I was quite certain that your camera was cabable of such performance, but life's trials have taught me not to assume anything because if you do then this happens: "ass/u/me" (which means that assuming too much makes an ass out of you and me). Consider yourself part of the BLUWGN WLSR Team.

You have to ask?
Dave Beedon13-Nov-2006 02:49
Thank you, Gary. Our team needs all the help it can get. Does your camera shoot as fast as one millionth of a second?

When you're ready for the 800 mph test drive, let me know. I'll photograph you.
