Travelers on Interstate 80 in Utah have seen this GPS resolver but probably
thought it was some weird sculpture. Indeed, it is deliberately described to
the public as a piece of artwork called "The Tree of Utah." Search the Web
for that phrase and see what I mean. The deception is so well accomplished
that even I was momen-tarily confused when I first saw it.
This device, 26 miles east of the Utah-Nevada boundary, is here for a
specific reason: the salt flats in this location are so thick with certain
ionized elements that they enhance the handling of GPS signals. The resolver
would not function as efficiently (electronically and monetarily) elsewhere.
This is the only one of its kind. Security is rampant here, but you
can't see a trace of it. I can say no more.
