Hatchet cover

view map

I bought the hatchet in the early or mid-1980s. Its original cover (left photo) was made of thin brown imitation leather. After several years of use, the snap on the cover broke or was torn off. My fix for that was a shoelace wrapped around the cover as in the left photo. That endured for about two decades. Then I spent a few years thinking about replacing it with a better cover. In May 2011 I took the first step in achieving that by buying the black leather cover at right.

But wait, there's more!

When I got home I saw that the black cover was way too big for the hatchet. What to do? I contemplated exchanging it, but I lost the receipt. The cover sat around in various places in the garage for a year, waiting for me to take additional action.

Then, in June 2012, a miracle occurred---I got the motivation to alter the black cover so it would fit the hatchet. I shortened the cover by trimming about an inch off the curved right side. That eliminated a few rivets, so I secured that edge with Shoo Goo. The cover fits as if it were designed for the hatchet. End of story.
