BLU WGN meets Thelma and Louise

view map

BLU WGN sits in the same place as did the car carrying Thelma and Louise during the final scene of the movie named after the two main characters. My car is about ten feet (3m) from a precipice 400 feet (130m) above the Colorado River near Moab, Utah. In the movie, I think it was implied that the characters were at the brink of the Grand Canyon. The car that was catapulted over the precipice was later retrieved so as not to litter the river bank. In the interest of furthering my photographic endeavors, I decided not to emulate the action of Thelma and Louise.

This "parking lot" is a turn-out on a rough dirt road that runs parallel to the Colorado River southwest of the city of Moab. The road leading to the turn-out is San Juan County Road 142, sometimes erroneously called Potash Road or Shafer Trail. The area of the turn-out has the traditional name of Fossil Point and is located southeast of and 1600 feet below Dead Horse Point. It is on land managed by the Bureau of Land Management, about two miles east of Canyonlands National Park. Because of the movie's notoriety, Fossil Point is often called "Thelma and Louise Point."

"Thelma and Louise" is described in the Internet Movie Database and in WikiPedia.
