The dark patches of mud are more moist than the light areas. Farther out on the mud flat they were even darker, which meant they were wetter and thus more prone to stick to the tires. It was a nightmare to travel through the stuff.
After hiking two miles, during which I had to clean the tires several times, I gave up and turned around. This shot was taken on the return hike. By this time I had given up on the waist-mounted pulling harness I had made and was pulling the cart by its dowel handles. This looks about north toward the area I had come from.
