After hiking up Peak 5297 I spent the night in my car at this site at the edge of
the playa. Previous visitors had built a fire ring and added benches made from large
timbers. Other furnishings included rusty mattress springs (at far left) and an empty
bright green ice chest. It was a suitably lonely, quiet place to camp. Above and
behind the fire ring is the dirt road leading to this spot from the "Crater Island
road," which runs horizontally from left to right but is not visible.
On the ground around the front end of my car is a rodent-repelling barrier I built to ward off
any critter than might want to get into my engine compartment, something that happened in the
mountains of Oregon in May 2009 (it cost my insurance company about $1500 to repair the damage).
The barrier is strips of blue plastic tarp to which I stapled scented dryer sheets.
Ralph Tripod is taking a break between sessions of supporting my camera. Joe Tripod
was relaxing in the car, as campsite support duties have been transferred to Ralph.
