Tabunan Mountains

Fatbirder's Top 1000 Birding Websites

Finally saw the playground of the Cebu Flowerpecker in the central mountains of Cebu Province. Unfortunately, the CFP lived up to its reputation of being akin to a needle in a haystack. We trekked the mountainsides for two days, looking for any sign of the rare bird. It did not oblige us, but we came home with better knowledge of its habitat for future attempts.

As consolation, we managed to get the pics of the very beautiful Crimson Sunbird, and the tiny and skittish Everett's White Eye. It's interesting to note that the CFP's ranging area is in the shadow of Mt. Manunggal, the crash site of Pres. Magsaysay's airplane.

Kudos to soon-to-be-dad Nilo Arribas for organizing the trip on very short notice. Special thanks to Raul Puentespina who graciously assisted us with the logistics and guidance on the local terrain.

No, this isn't the CFP. It's future dad Nilo Arribas taking aim at a langgam (Cebuano vernacular for bird).

Raul and I huff and puff our way up a mountain trail in Tabunan. We actually lost several pounds each during this trek,
but regained everything back when we downed several bottles of SanMig beer after we returned to the city...8-)

A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT. Deep in a valley amidst the Tabunan Mountains, a river provides life-giving water to flora and fauna, including perhaps our most wanted CFP.

This is the trail that goes down towards the valley and river. It's quite easy to trek, going DOWN. Don't ask me how it is climbing UP...8-)
No, Virginia, badminton is not needed to slim down in these parts.
