Update: I definitely just saw one at my feeder containing the Fruit and Nut blend in Randallstown!!!
Alexia 27-Mar-2017 15:32
Update - Sorry, I think they may actually be Orchard Orioles; their feathers look more greenish-yellow!
Alexia 27-Mar-2017 15:10
There are two at my feeders in Randallstown. I have two Brome feeders, one contains a Fruit and Nut Blend and the other contains a Select Blend Wild Bird Food.

I forgot to mention that they are still here and it's almost January!

I have a Finch feeder in our backyard here in Eldersburg MD. It holds two feeder socks that I fill with thistle. I have up to a dozen gold Finch at any given time along with all the other Finch! They also visit my regular bird feeders. Love watching them!

I've noticed a pair for around a week now in Great Mills, MD around the flowers on my back porch. I'm glad I found this site because I've been trying to identify them. Beautiful little birds always flying as a pair .
Linda Riley 19-Jul-2016 00:09
I'm so glad I found this sight. I think the two birds that I see out side my window are finches except one has a green and yellow color and the other has a brown and yellow color. They come very early in the morning and pick at the center of my flowers called "tickseeds". I always get excited to see them. I live in Clinton Md.
Guest 12-Jul-2016 20:04

I saw one of these by Fort Detrick, MD in Frederick the other day, never seen one before the other day. I thought it was those house birds but it was a little bigger so I had to look it up. Beautiful little yellow bird. Now I know it's a goldfinch :)

On May 5, 2016 we saw the most We've ever seen together, about 30 or more in Riviera Beach/Pasadena, MD. What a beautiful sight to see, as they kept flying down to grass & back up to the nearby trees. I have only seen 1 or 2 once in a while around here. I would love to put out bird feeders, but the squirrels won't stay out of them. Want to attract them to my home in northern edge of Glen Burnie/southern Brooklyn Park, MD😊They are one of the most beautiful little birds I have ever seen.

I have been noticing multiple Goldfinches on a daily basis visiting my Zinnias. They have been hopping back and forth between the flowers. I know nothing about them but they are a Lovely bird.
Also the Humming Birds are loving my Zinnias. This is the 1st year that I have ever planted Zinnias at my mailbox approx. 600 seeds. I will definitely plant them again. (Emmitsburg, MD)

Just saw this bird in the Village of Dorchester and it was picking at some flowers, absolutely beautiful.

We planted sunflowers for the kids in the spring. We saw our first goldfinch in Catonsville today. Boy...it's a beautiful bright yellow bird with black tail feathers on the young sunflower pods.
Guest 20-Jun-2015 14:24
Just saw 3 outside of our window 30 seconds ago on a tree in Baltimore City. Wow, my husband, dog, and I watched them until a robin flew in and landed on the same tree scaring them away.

Hi.. we live in Rising Sun MD and have about 8feeders in the back yard.. we have an average of about 8 (5-12) beautiful gold finches all year round. We have even counted 15 at one time. My dad enjoys watching and even has a thistle seed bag out that they love.
Guest 10-Aug-2013 21:40

Just saw one in my backyard, sharing the newly dug up cicada feast with a happily married cardinal couple. The yellow is breath-taking! Like a flying dandelion!

I'm recovering from back surgery and this is the coolest bird I have seen in awhile. Very cool to see in Frederick, MD. I'm not even a bird watcher. Just a 32 year old dude with a bad back and wanted to find out what cool bird I had just seen. Great website you have here to help us find the birds we may see in the future.
Guest 06-Mar-2012 01:16
I absolutely love this bird. It's a relief to see it, it shows me spring is here.
Guest 17-Aug-2011 18:54
I live in Stevenson, Baltimore County. We have a large field next to our house. Over the last 2 weeks there have been HUNDREDS of goldfinches in this field.

I live in Baltimore County near 695 and I95. My Dad was a Audobon member, and
showed me alot of Marylands birds. Today I saw this tiny bright yellow bird with black tail feathers. As I watched another came along and they both flew away fast.
I was tickled to see them considering where I lived. What a beautiful bird.
Joe Taylor 22-Jul-2011 22:27

Question: I live in Cheverly Md., and i see alot of little birds that are all Yellow, are they finches?
Guest 29-Jun-2011 13:12
Just saw my first goldfinch fluttering and landing on the side of our brick wall. After five years away from Maryland, it is wonderful to see such beauties in my own yard. I'm off to buy feeders and seed!
Guest 24-Jun-2011 13:17
Saw a pair at our birdfeeder today in Westminster

I live in Annapolis and we back to woods. We moved here about 4 years ago. For two years we had tons of yellow finches. I put out a feeder with thistle seeds. For the last two years there is not a yellow finch in sight. I wonder what happened to them. Any ideas, anyone???
Shane 27-Mar-2011 14:09
Just had our first American Goldfinch visitor this morning (Montgomery Village, MD), and we loved it. Thanks so much for posting this site...it's been really helpful as we try to learn more about the birds in our area!
Debi 06-Aug-2010 21:00
They love my blackeyed susans! germantown md
guest 10-Jul-2010 20:46
I LOVE these little birds. They love their bird feeders that I have devoted specidfically for them...filled with nyjer seed!!!! They hang upside down and come in 3 and 4 taking turns to get their fill. BTW, great site. Thanks.
Guest 18-Jun-2010 01:11
They love to sit on my coneflowers in the late summer and pick out the seeds. They are so light that they land right on top of the dry blooms.
Guest 15-Jun-2010 16:48
Thanks for reference. These birds are beautiful. I had never seen them before in my garden in Ellicott City, Md. However, there is a problem. They land on my flowers and pull the petals out like they're playing "She loves me, she loves me not". Lot of destruction.
friendly watcher 16-May-2010 22:45
I love these birds! I see them all over the place in Western Loudoun County in Virginia... The color of this photo really doesn't do them justice, the yellow is REALLY striking!

I AM JUST STARTING BIRD FEEDING, CAUGHT THE BUG FROM MY MOM IN NC WHAT SHOULD I START FEEDING THEM AND WHAT KIND OF BIRDS WILL I ATTRACT COLUMBIA, MD
Guest 01-May-2010 18:17
Cool!
Judi 09-Feb-2010 23:52
I hope I'm not wrong, but I think I've had goldfinches find my feeder today! About a month ago, I put out a feeder with black oil sunflower seeds. Because that was successful, a few days ago I decided to put out a feeder with nyger seed as well. This horrible winter of 2010 (over 3 feet of snow!) has to make it difficult for our little friends to find food, which is why I thought of putting out a feeder in the first place - I've never "bird-watched" before, but boy -- am I hooked!! The "Bird Show" is the funniest thing to watch throughout the day!! (Glen Burnie, MD)
Guest 17-Aug-2009 21:00
I think it may be the flowers. This is the first year I have Zinnias and Marigolds and this is the first year I have ever seen them. There are three of them that visit daily.
Melisa 17-Jul-2009 16:51
Work in Owings Mills, and was looking outside my window at work and saw this beautiful yellow and black bird. I immediately googled Maryland Birds and saw this site and had to comment. What a B.E.A.utiful bird.
Guest 17-May-2009 13:59
I have seen this beuutiful creature outside my window the past two days and i am in ahh.
I have been in Maryland for years an never seen this type. Why? Is it because we have more water and cooler weather this time of year or what?
Guest 03-May-2009 03:11
nice one, like seeing the thistle Bokeh
Guest 12-May-2007 15:37
Thistle seeds.

I see these American Goldfinches in front of our house regularly. They seem to like flowers and the water along the side of the street that is running into the sewer drains from people's sump pump outlets. I have two bird feeders and large water plate (our bird watching area) on our back porch. I never the see the gold finches come to our bird watching area. I've seen many other birds. What is it that would attract these goldfinches to the back porch?
