From Festus Mo., a town 30 minutes south of St.louis Mo. Spotting was in middle of May, 2017.

Looking out my bedroom I saw this " thing" that shocked shocked me eating from a rotted tree trunk Andi called my husband to look very quietly. He also was shocked and we decided to look it up, calling it a large woodpecker. In a few day the Mate came to same place to feed on carpenter ants she was not as big but very large. I haven't seen them again but my yard I full of these odd looking smaller, or regular size bird feeding at my bird feeder and them only. I had just put up my feeder.

I saw one of these woodpecker this year, in the town 30 miles east of Toomsoboro, Ga,
The town is the home of Luaral & Hardie museum.
It flew right in front of my work van and landed on a large pine tree.
It was on a deserted back country road.
