5th July 2006 - Wurlitzer

We’ve had a day off today and, in a spirit of trying to get to know our new home, we’ve been on a jaunt. We took the train to Looe (yep, there really is a place in England called Looe – it’s rather a lovely little fishing port/seaside town on the south coast of Cornwall).

After a couple of hours ambling around and having a nice café lunch, we took the train to a place called St Keyne, where we met a man called Paul Corin. What a man he turned out to be. As you know, I have a soft spot for people with stories to tell and this man was one of those people. He has got charisma by the bucket load and a love of his collection of organs that you’d be hard to fault.

Instead of ‘an organ museum’ we were treated to a one-man show, where the organs were brought to life by this charming man. He will hate me for this shot, because he told me that he disapproved of shots where you can’t see the whole machine, but I hope he’ll forgive me when he sees my Magnificent Music Machine gallery, where these lovely objects are photographed in their glory. I am not utterly delighted with my shots because I was hand-holding, wide-open at high ISOs – in fact, I actually put two through neat image before posting to take off their edges. In any event, this is MY favourite shot of the day. To me it sums up this exquisite thing totally because the photo has a tactile quality that won’t lie down. (If you see what I mean!)

This is the star of the show – a theatre Wurlitzer. What a magnificent thing.

I just knew we’d love the museum but had no idea how much of a rare and wonderful treat the Paul Corin experience would be. Let’s face it – how could a museum, filled with beautiful, decorative wooden objects that are not only things of enormous beauty but actually play music (often without a human) fail to grab our attention and our hearts….and that’s before you factor into the equation a man with a deep love for his charges and a twinkle in his eye.

There are way too many Cornish websites that will tell you that any business willing to pay them is a ‘great day out’. For me, most aren’t. This undoubtedly is. Every last penny and the two hours we invested in this place were worth it and I know we’ll go back. Take it from me, if you have a heart, you’ll love this place. It’s fab!

Last year, I was wound up by 'art'!

Looks like a wonderful place to visit. Jerry and our son spent Tuesday playing very small music boxes at our local museum.

So, did you or David drink first from the well?

Do you think Dad could find me a new liver?

This is a good place to visit when we come to Cornwall in August. Dad is very interested in organs!
