25th March 2006 - the camera DOES lie....

I am always intrigued by the statement ‘the camera never lies’. Of course it does. It lies all of the time. It can make plain girls pretty, pretty girls plain, fat girls thin and thin girls fat. It can make a nasty person look nice or a nice person look nasty.

Take this shot…..looks quite glamorous huh? Well, it’s me, in a tatty old tee-shirt and no make-up, with my boots on over bare legs and a skirt draped across the top. It looks like I’m sitting on a nice chair, if a little dated, huh? Well, I’m not. I’m sitting on a chair beside the one in the picture, because the one in the picture is not big enough to get feet in that spot when sitting on that chair. It looks like I’m relaxed huh? Well, I’m not – in fact I’m stressed from dashing back and forth setting off the shutter, which is just too far away to reach from the chair.

So, the camera lies in terms of what it portrays in an image. Guess what too – it sometimes lies in the sentiment it depicts as well. I look as though I’m glammed up, maybe waiting to go out for the evening after spending a wonderful Saturday skipping around in the sunshine scattering rose petals before me…..or home from a smashing afternoon sipping lattes in a genteel café on the corner of a glamorous shopping street.

So what’s my day been like? Nothing like any of the above – David and I have been half-killing ourselves working on the grand plan…..which is moving rapidly towards another piece being completed so I am NOT complaining but it is hard work and I do feel as though I am a DULL girl with all this work with no chance to play at all. The weather has been completely filthy – howling wind, rain, fog and cloud have been the order of the day.

Sometime in the next few weeks, we can lift the foot off the gas a bit in the grand plan and take a bit of time to recuperate. Boy do I feel I need it.

So, I decided on this lie of a photo to express a desire, rather than a fact. It’s an illusion, a fictitious account of my day. The camera does indeed lie. Don’t trust it. It's lying now.

Last year? I was chasing waterfalls.

...and there was I thinking you had 10 minutes to put your feet up. Wise words!

Good photo and a sentiment. I'm always cognizant of "reality" and the interpretation thereof when I take pictures or shoot video. You mentioned things not as they seem and running back and forth... For my tribute shot earlier this week, I had to run b/f and then scrunch down to fit into the shot without looking like I was bent over... LOL! Nice b/w, by the way.
