We are still in the grip of this cold spell that’s been with us for a few weeks now. Today though, we woke up to a really weird phenomenon – it was as if someone had sprayed the plants in our garden and on the moors with white paint over the way from the east and not gone back to do the other side. Everything had a layer of white ice down the easterly side and no sign of frost or ice on the west facing parts of the plants.
I must be honest, I can’t remember a cold spell lasting this long for certainly fifteen years and maybe even twenty. The last time, I was working at Nielsen because I remember walking across their car park in the bitter cold so that means it was certainly pre-1993.
Also, if I’m honest, I think we moved house at exactly the right moment because this house has central heating so where we would have been shivering in the shower in the mornings in our old house, now we are cosy and warm. So, for once it feels as though we made a good choice – most of the time at the moment, I’m overwhelmed by feeling as though we’ve landed ourselves in the cackie again.
I am nowhere near recovered from yesterday, having followed up that 16 hour day with a 6am start to today’s work schedule (and once again this is day four working….so much for a three-day week huh?) Now I feel the need for some well-earned R&R but I doubt that’ll be forthcoming when we still have so much needing doing.
Despite all the extra work hours, at least I did get to go out with my camera today and not have to feel guilty for spending a bit of time on me. Actually what happened to that? January was supposed to be time for me – working three days a week and having four whole days for me before starting to help David build up his business in February. That plan worked then.
On Sunday we will have been here a whole month and I don’t think there has been a day during that time when our bird baths or our soil have thawed. I know that’s a short time for many people over a winter but for us it’s very unusual.
