This photo gives a totally different impression of our day than we would consider accurate! It’s hugely under-exposed quite deliberately to give these striking cloud effects against the silhouette of church of St Nizier. I’d been playing about with shots of the tower with the sunlight behind it at DMs suggestion but I eventually plumped for this shot because I felt its jaunty angle and flare added to the overall feel.
In fact the day has been beautifully sunny and warm (I’ve got a few pink bits) and we’ve walked our feet off tramping from our hotel in a huge circle onto the narrow tongue of land that separates the Rhone and the Saone. This is the centre of Lyon and is extremely beautiful. We’ve seen the heart of the city at its finest, in August sunshine but with enough light cloud cover to provide some respite and to keep the temperature down to around 30 degrees, I’d say.
We’ve eaten crepes in a tiny café, strolled along the banks of both rivers, taken a ride in a funicular rail car to the Roman remains of two huge amphitheatres and taken in the breathtaking view from the Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourviere, not to mention wandering round the streets and taking in the Opera, Hotel de Ville and the Place de Republique. We’ve even done a bit of real French tradition – people watching from a pavement café!
After a quick snooze back in our palatial hotel room, we had a stroll around the park and off out for supper. My feet are killing me but this is the kind of place I love and the kind of tourism I feel comfortable with.
What a wonderful day.
Last year we were out with Shazbop and Champagne Hughie and two years ago, my tomatoes were starting to ripen!
